Cosmetic Allergies 101

What is a cosmetic allergy?
Cosmetic allergies, like an allergy, means you are have an allergic reaction to a certain chemical or enviromental product. A cosmetic allergy is an allergy to the chemical compounds that make up the cosmetic.

How do I know if I have a allergy to cosmetics?
The question is do you have an adverse reaction to the cosmetics you wear. Does your skin become red? Does it swell? Do you get itchy hives? If your answer is yes to any of these questions then yes you probably have an allergy to a type of cosmetic or a certain chemical compund in the cosmetic. Stop wearing them and see if it doesn't get better. If it doesn't, its probably caused by something else, but you should see a doctor anyway.

Cosmetic allergies can also effect eyes, lips or nose. Sometimes it also effect other parts of the body. Cosmetic allergies affect at least 10% of the population.

What do I do if I have an allergy to makeup? Does this mean that I cannot wear any cosmetics?
If possible, try to read the back of the label of the product. Remember that irritations and allergies can also be caused by other products such as soaps, shampoos, body washes and even fragrances. Check with your doctor for more information on what are common triggers of cosmetic allergies. Once you know you can avoid products with the same ingredients that caused the reaction.

Often its best to go with hypoallergenic cosmetics such as Almay, which you can buy for cheap at a drugstore. Another good option is organic makeup,or beauty products with more natural ingredients. Some of my faves include Burt's Bees,Lush,Fresh, and Juice Beauty

Almay
Burt's Bees
Lush
Fresh

Juice Beauty Sensitive Skincare Line(they also have several other different lines for different skin issues, but its still natural)

Fresh Sugar lipgloss is sexy and fresh! Check out my previous Fresh post.

Although it may look less than glam,I can honestly say Burt's Bees products work and smell like a dream! Check out my previous Burt's Bees post.
